August is about to get hotter than usual this year. Colombian superstar and belly dancing queen Shakira will bring her moves and distinctive voice to Prishtina. Local news agencies report the Hips Dont Lie songstress will headline a humanitarian concert scheduled to take place at an open-air venue. Producer Rudolf Keller from Power Concert Company has expressed interest in 'transforming' Prishtina into a hot-spot destination for world renowned music stars and Shakira will be the one to break the ice.
The concert will be held at a yet undetermined open space in suburban Pristina. Other artists will perform and the plan is to turn the event into a festival. Camping areas will be available for those who don't prefer running back and forth to the venue. The concert will be organized in cooperation with UNICEF and the proceedings will go to organizations raising funds to help children injured and traumatized during the 1999 war. Shakira is known for her humanitarian efforts, having been honored with a gold medal from the UN labor agency for her work in helping impoverished children. She was named a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF in October 2003 and has donated millions of dollars for different causes through her Pies Descalzos foundation.
Shakira reached superstardom when she crossed over to the English-speaking market in 2002 with her album Laundry Service. She has won two Grammy awards, seven Latin Grammy Awards, twelve Billboard Latin Music Awards and has also been nominated for a Golden Globe. She is the highest-selling Colombian artist in history, having sold over 70 million records. Shakira enjoys a cult status in Spanish speaking countries for her unique lyrics and early musical releases. Most people know her from the hip-shaking, steamy videos and shes often perceived as one of the most commercial artists in the market, but her non-single songs have been universally acclaimed by critics, with her latest album Sale el Sol getting rave reviews from the likes of The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly.
In April, Power Concert Company will unveil more details on the upcoming event.
